Ask any of our tutors and they’ll tell you – tutors get more than they give. The bonds built with students, as they demonstrate commitment and dedication to learning, are truly unforgettable. These relationships are the reason so many of our tutors come back year after year.
Prior to being assigned a student or small class, all volunteer tutors receive specialized training – prior teaching experience is NOT required. We ask tutors to commit to teaching one full school year (continuity is important to our students’ success) and tutors spend approximately five to six hours per week instructing and planning lessons. However, we give you all the tools you need to be successful!
Tutors can choose either a one-on-one or one-on-two basic literacy arrangement or a small classroom of English language learners. Knowledge of a language other than English is NOT required.
The Literacy Center board of directors provides leadership and governance to the organization. The Literacy Center board has up to 15 directors, with a variety of committees that develop strategies for organizational success. Board members serve a three-year term, which can be renewed once.
