JOIN US FOR OUR THIRD ANNUAL
AMERICAN DREAM CELEBRATION
Success stories consist of more than milestone celebrations.
In between birthdays and anniversaries, small victories are taking place at The Literacy Center that will eventually build into great accomplishments.
Beaufort County’s only adult literacy nonprofit intends to celebrate those achievements when it hosts our third annual The American Dream Celebration from 6 to 9 p.m. on Friday, March 20 at the University of South Carolina Beaufort Campus on Hilton Head Island.
This exciting event — presented by Vaden Nissan Hilton Head — will feature passed appetizers and wine and beer bar; a sit-down dinner; a live and silent auction with one-of-a-kind treasures; and live music. The new Superintendent of the Beaufort County School District, Dr. Frank Rodriguez, will deliver the evening’s keynote address on the intergenerational cycle of low literacy. Lowcountry radio legend Monty Jett will once again serve as master of ceremonies for the evening, while WSAV TV Reporter Andrew Davis will showcase his talents as a guest auctioneer.
“The American Dream Celebration allows us to shine a spotlight on our inspirational adult learners and hero tutors who are changing lives forever,” says Brad Steele, Executive Director for TLC. “Every time I walk into one of our classrooms, I am inspired by the motivation, hard work and courage of our students who come to The Literacy Center to build better lives for themselves and their families. As we embark on a new decade, with new challenges and opportunities on the horizon, we invite our neighbors and community to support this special evening as well as our work to change lives, one word at a time.”
Close to 500 students from 29 countries are currently enrolled at TLC’s Bluffton and Hilton Head Island Learning Centers, which provide reading, writing and math courses as well as a new workforce development program and Pre-GED instruction.
Honorary chairs for this year’s celebration are Tom and Jane Upshaw. Tom is the former CEO and President of Palmetto Electric Cooperative. Jane is the former Chancellor of University of South Carolina Beaufort.
“Literacy is a gift that lasts a lifetime,” said the Upshaw’s. “It has the amazing ability to uplift, open doorways and empower. We are very humbled and honored to serve as honorary chairs of The Literacy Center’s The American Dream Celebration this year. We look forward to the opportunity to give back, have fun, and raise money for an incredible cause at the same time.”
During the celebration, current and former student success stories will be shared, and TLC’s volunteer tutors will also be recognized for their dedication and inspiration.
Tickets for the celebration are on sale now for $100 each or tables of 10 for $1,000. Tickets are limited and sell out quickly.
All funds raised at The American Dream Celebration event will support TLC’s adult literacy and workforce development programs.
