When a prospective student walks through our doors our goal is to provide them every opportunity for success. Our mission is to equip adults with the reading, writing, math and speaking skills they need to become more engaged at home, at work and in our communities and we do that by offering a variety of programs at numerous times and locations to best meet each student’s needs. Classes start in September and follow the school calendar.
Once a student registers for classes, a test is administered which determines the correct academic level. This ensures that each student is placed in the appropriate class where they will be most comfortable and most likely to succeed.
The Literacy Center offers the following programs:
This program is designed for adults who want to improve their reading, writing and math skills. Tutoring is confidential and generally offered on a one-to-one basis. Students can meet with their tutor at one of our main learning centers or any public place that is convenient for both. The student and tutor decide where and when to meet. Computerized instruction is also available at our main learning centers.
Because each student’s needs are unique, prior to beginning classes, each student is interviewed to determine his/her skills and goals. This allows the tutor to develop an education plan which focuses instruction at what’s important to the student.
The Pre-GED program is for students who have tested above the Adult Basic Education level and are preparing to take the GED test. This program focuses on math, reading, and writing and can be one-on-one or small group, depending on students’ academic levels and areas of focus.
The Literacy Center offers English instruction for adult students who want to improve their English language skills. Course levels range from beginning to advanced and focus on conversation, reading and writing English. Courses are designed to assist adults with day-to-day activities at home, at work and in the community.
The Literacy Center offers preparation classes for adults wishing to gain United States citizenship.
Classes are offered during day and evening hours Monday – Thursday at numerous locations. Times and classes vary. Please call the main learning centers to get details.
TLC’s Family Literacy 360 program is in response to requests from the community to bring together children and their parents to develop literacy skills. The objective is to break the intergenerational cycle of low literacy and teach parents that they are their child’s first teacher and that they can be successful at it. The curriculum includes school/teacher learning/homework skills; health, wellness, nutrition; family finance, community; transportation; and computer skills.
